How do I plant a tree,

shrub, or perennial?

Planting Trees, Perennials, and Shrubs – Essentials

Before planting, always call the appropriate utility locator service (such as DIG-SAFE in Kansas, DIG-RITE in Missouri, or Indiana811 in Indiana). You can usually reach them by dialing 811. This ensures your safety by marking utility lines before you start digging.

Each tree is unique and may need specific planting techniques. Consult your KAT or Brehob Account Representative for guidance on light and moisture requirements for your tree. Planting trees using the PlantRight method ensures healthy growth and makes the process more efficient.

Follow these simplified steps for a successful tree planting:

  1. Use a tarp to place the soil for easy compost mixing and cleanup.
  2. Dig a hole slightly wider and no deeper than the rootball.
  3. Drain any water from the hole and remove any shrink-wrap that may be covering the rootball.
  4. Position the tree in the hole and straighten it.
  5. Fill the hole partially with soil and pack it firmly.
  6. Remove the top portion of the basket and burlap, and all twine.
  7. Mix the soil on the tarp with PlantRight compost.
  8. Backfill the hole with the soil/compost mix, without compacting it.
  9. Spread the remaining compost over the planting area.
  10. Avoid pruning, except for broken branches, at planting time.
  11. Apply Bio-Life 800+ via drench application.
  12. For B&B planting, container shrub, and PlantRight Package instructions, follow the general planting steps with minor adjustments, such as digging the hole to a specific depth or removing the tree from the container.

Always ensure that mulch does not cover any foliage at the base of the plant. By following these guidelines, you’ll create the ideal environment for your tree to grow and thrive.
